Advancing equitable electric mobility for formal and informal transport systems across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Professor Thinus Booysen holds joint appointments in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Department of Industrial Engineering at Stellenbosch University.
He leads the Electric Mobility Lab, which supports the electrification of both formal and informal transport across Sub-Saharan Africa, spanning electric motorcycles, minibus taxis and buses.
His wider research programme covers IoT-based demand management, smart metering, water and energy systems, and open-source transport-planning tools.
His work combines rigorous engineering research with a strong focus on transport equity, aiming to make electric mobility solutions viable and accessible in African contexts.
