Leading research and development at Malmö University’s Sustainable Digitalization Research Centre, applying emerging digital technologies to sustainable societal and industrial transformation.

Dr. Fisseha Mekuria is Chief Scientist at the Sustainable Digitalization Research Centre (SDRC) at Malmö University, where he leads research and development across emerging digital technologies. His work covers 5G, the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, with applications in environmental monitoring, inclusive connectivity and the sustainable digitalization of societal services and industrial systems.

He holds a PhD from Linköping University and previously worked as a Senior Research Engineer at Ericsson Mobile Communications’ research laboratory in Lund. He has authored more than 85 peer-reviewed conference and journal papers, contributed to several book chapters and holds more than 15 patents in wireless communications and signal processing.

Fisseha has led research and development projects with Ericsson, Sida and mobile operators focused on skills development and the sustainable deployment of mobile-technology systems in Africa. He later joined South Africa’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research as a Chief Scientist, leading work with industry, UNDP and ITU on sustainable digitalisation and emerging-technology applications.

He has also supported postgraduate research and education as an adjunct professor at the University of Johannesburg and the University of the Witwatersrand. His recognitions include a Google Research Award for Mobile Computing and South Africa’s National Science and Technology Award for research and innovation.
