Biography

Designing cities
for everyone.

Advancing inclusive, healthy and climate-resilient African cities through evidence, participation and equitable mobility planning.

Cassilde Muhoza is a Research Fellow and Lead of the Inclusive, Healthy and Sustainable Cities Cluster at the Stockholm Environment Institute's Africa Centre. She is also a PhD candidate in Human Geography and Environment at the University of York.

With more than ten years of experience in sustainable urban planning and urban governance, her work focuses on sustainable and inclusive urban mobility, city health and wellbeing, air quality, and just energy transitions in African cities.

Her current research explores pathways for accelerating a just transition to electric public transport in East African cities, with particular attention to viable and inclusive business models for electrifying informal transport services.

Cassilde also examines the mobility needs and travel patterns of children, women, people with disabilities, older people, delivery workers and residents of low-income urban areas. Her work considers how transport systems can better support health, safety, accessibility and social equity.

Working with transport operators, vulnerable users and urban decision-makers, she co-designs inclusive mobility solutions and develops roadmaps, guidelines and investment frameworks that help translate research into policy and implementation.
