Aklilu Fikresilassie, PhD, is the Director of Cities for WRI Africa. With more than 20 years of leadership and technical experience in urban development, environmental policy and programme management, he has worked across government, international organisations and the non-profit sector.
Before joining WRI, he served as UN-Habitat Programme Manager and Representative in Ethiopia and as a Planning Specialist with UNDP in South Sudan. He has also held senior government positions, including Bureau Head for Finance and Economic Cooperation and City Manager.
Aklilu is an active researcher focusing on urban development, environmental policy and common-pool resource management. He holds a PhD in Environmental Policy and Urbanisation from University College Dublin.
At the Nordic–Africa EV Summit, he brings an urban-development perspective to the conversation on future African cities and corridors as new frontiers for sustainable growth.
